Michael’s Junk Removal and Light Hauling provides fast, affordable debris removal for homeowners, contractors, and remodelers throughout Carroll County and surrounding areas.

How to Remove Deck Boards Like a Pro

If your deck is starting to show signs of rot, warping, or splintering, removing old boards is the first step toward a safer and more beautiful outdoor space. Whether you’re repairing a few planks or preparing for a full resurfacing, here’s how to remove deck boards efficiently and safely.

Step 1: Check the Condition of the Boards

Before diving into removal, take a few minutes to assess the deck. Look for boards that are cracked, soft, or bowed. Prioritize removing any that pose safety hazards, especially those near stairs or entry points.

Step 2: Use the Right Tools

To remove deck boards cleanly and minimize damage to the frame underneath, gather these tools:

  • Pry bar or deck board removal tool (like a Duckbill or Deck Demon)
  • Cordless drill or impact driver (for screws)
  • Hammer and mallet
  • Work gloves and safety glasses

Deck removal tools help lift boards from the joists without splitting or breaking them—a huge time-saver if you’re planning to reuse or repurpose any of the wood.

Step 3: Remove Fasteners

If the deck boards are screwed in, use a drill to back them out. Stripped screws? Use a screw extractor or pry the board up around it and remove it from underneath. For nailed-down boards, wedge your pry bar near the nails and apply pressure slowly to lift the board without cracking it.

Step 4: Remove and Stack Boards

Once the fasteners are out or loose, begin pulling up the boards starting at one end. Work your way down, stacking the removed boards neatly to avoid tripping hazards. If the boards are warped or heavy, a second set of hands can help.

Step 5: Clean the Joists

With the boards removed, inspect the joists for rot or leftover nails and screws. Clean and prep them for new decking if you’re rebuilding. Don’t skip this step—any damage left underneath will shorten the life of your new boards.
